Original PRESS RELEASE
Stonington Hosts Prestigious Vocal Music Festival
On Saturday, October 14, five of the premier vocal music groups from the eastern seaboard will gather in Stonington Borough for Harmonic Convergence, a festival of a cappella music. And according to the Connecticut-based hosts of the event, the Conn Artists, this is not your father's a cappella.
"When most people hear 'a cappella' they think of barbershop quartets, guys in red and white striped vests and straw hats" says Conn Artists Music Director Mike Costantino, "but that's not what people will hear at Harmonic Convergence." Instead, says Costantino, they will hear a mix of all styles of music, from rock to jazz to 50's doo-wop to gospel and blues. "It's all about making great music, beautiful harmonies, and entertaining the audience." For example, the Conn Artists' repertoire includes songs by such diverse artists as the Doobie Brothers, Cole Porter and Dave Brubeck, as well as folk songs and sacred pieces.
In addition to the Conn Artists, the show will feature Boston's AKA Pelican Groove and The Works, New Jersey-based Jersey Transit, and Jones Falls Express, hailing from the Baltimore/DC area.
Harmonic Convergence had its inception in 1994(?), when groups from all down the eastern seaboard decided to get together to share their music with each other and with the local audience. The first concert was held in Easton Maryland, and a tradition began. Since then, Harmonic Convergence has taken place in Grafton Vermont, Cape May, New Jersey, and Virginia.
"When it came to be our turn to host the event," says Conn Artists business manager Charles Dear, "we looked around Connecticut to find a spot that would be a great spot for the other groups to visit, and would be receptive to this kind of unusual event. We've always loved performing in this area, and what better place for a fall weekend trip?"
The concert will be held on Saturday, October 14 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Church of Stonington, which is located at 67Main Street in Stonington. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children, with a $20 maximum per family. Day care will be provided. For more information, contact Charles Dear at (203) 453-7572 or (800) 567-9502.
